I had an unexpectedly brilliant time at a concert I attended last night at the Bottom Lounge with Josh aka
bigbadwoof. I had to cancel Tuesday night plans with Josh so we just rescheduled since he had (fortuitously for me) an extra ticket to a show playing on Wednesday. I never heard one lick from any of the bands, but the company was good, so I decided to keep an open mind and just say why the fuck not?
The show was terrific fun. Follows was quite rock-ish and to me sounded a bit like Peter Frampton and Tool were curbstomping Enya. In a good way, that is. I think the lead siger was going for a breathy half-goth singing style, but the music drowned her vocals a bit. This was ok of course since the rest of the band was very talented and I enjoyed everything I was hearing.
I FUCKING LOVED School of Seven Bells, a trio comprised of two sisters and one other fellow. They have one album out now called Alpinisms... the music was very upbeat with some amazing harmonies from the two sisters. It really reminded me of Feist or some Mates of State songs... I was completely doing the white boy shuffle the entire time. There was one song I would have killed to hear someone mash-up with the Eurythmics "Missionary Man" and the rest of the set was very high energy. Plus I always like seeing the band at the Merchandise booth.
More on them HERE.
The last band to play was Black Moth Super Rainbow... I think the best way to describe this band is if Beck were a woman singing only through a Vocorder and doing some of his more esoteric stuff full-time. It was quite surreal, especially with the film clips of things rotting and odd little videos playing behind the band. Plus, they lambasted juggalos before they started their set in a hilarious set of clips, so I was predisposed to like them from the start. Very lo-fi, very odd. It met my regular need for quirk rock.
You can check them out RIGHT HERE.
All in all I had a total blast, and as a venue I really loved the Bottom Lounge... designed to look a little sketchy like a good club should but clean & laid out very well. Plus the well rum was Bacardi Gold & you could get a pint to the tune of $6.00, much to Josh's delight. Cheap booze, cool music & a good buddy. I could ask little else from a Wednesday night.
Aside from more sleep. Geez I'm draggin' today. :-)
